THE OVER SIDE Cardigan is a feminine and easy-to-make women's cardigan, worked in stockinette stitch throughout the body and sleeves with a neckline on both sides so it can be worn in two directions. It also offers multiple finishes: an optional I-Cord at the sleeve cuffs that can be tightened, and an optional crochet border at the bottom of the body. It is knitted top-down, entirely back and forth (except for short rows), seamlessly and with circular needles.

It is knitted with 1 strand of FINGERING type yarn and 1 strand of LACE type yarn, and the green version uses 2 strands of LACE yarn, but other options are possible.

The tutorial includes descriptive instructions and a step-by-step video on my YouTube channel (links are in the tab below and on the pattern via clickable icons).

My bust measurement is 83 cm, and I wear a size 2 with 9 cm of positive ease for the raspberry version and 15 cm for the green version. I use ISEA and ISOLDA bases in "Fire in bloom" and "Raspberry" and "New Shoot" colorways.

  • Tester reviews:
    • This cardigan has it all: elegance, softness, and technique, a real pleasure to knit and wear!
    • Another superb design! A pseudo-classic cardigan with a whole modern lace play, a beauty!
    • This is undoubtedly the most elegant, most feminine pattern in my wardrobe. It's a true technical feat.
    • Fluid and addictive, this cardigan is a joy to knit.
    • I learned new techniques, and it fits super well. It's very rare that I'm satisfied with a product directly off my needles.

Construction details(s)

SEAMLESS(top-down, worked flat):

The CardiganTHE OVER SIDE Cardiganwas knitted with one strand of FINGERING weight yarn and one strand of LACE weight yarn (raspberry), and two strands of LACE weight yarn (green). Each front and back piece is knitted separately and then joined to create the back and front necklines. It is worked flat, top-down, in stockinette stitch.

Short rows are worked to lower the neck on each side. Stitches are increased at the armholes to reach the required number based on your bust circumference. The entire back and front will be joined, then continued flat until the chosen finishing, such as crochet, 1/1 ribbing, or a rolled stockinette edge.

Sleeves are created by picking up stitches around the armhole. For straight sleeves, they end with 1/1 ribbing. For puff sleeves, they end with a classic bind-off, I-Cord, or with a drawstring casing and an inserted I-Cord to adjust and create a gathered effect.

Finally, stitches are picked up along the cardigan to form a button and buttonhole band in double stockinette or a rolled stockinette edge. Stitches are also picked up around the neckline to form a rolled stockinette collar, I-cord, or left as is.
